The HP SlateBook x2 is more usable than the SlateBook 14, because you can detach the screen and use it as a tablet. Straight-arm poses over multiple hours would only feel natural to traffic cops.īattery life is a bright spot: The system lasted 9 hours 15 minutes on our standard battery rundown test, four more hours than the HP SlateBook x2, and two hours longer than the Toshiba CB35-A3120. Reaching across the keyboard to tap the touch screen is also annoying, particularly if a game or app uses touch as its primary interface. Using a 10-inch class tablet like the Apple iPad Air ($389.99 at eBay) or the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 ($179.95 at Amazon) is a much more satisfying game experience, since you don't have to waggle the extra weight of an unwieldy keyboard below the screen. Games like Asphalt 8 ran relatively smoothly in our tests, but using accelerometer-based controls here feel ridiculous.

The SlateBook 14 can actually run most Android apps, but, again, most of them are designed with touch input in mind, not touchpads.

And no updates have been promised for this ostensibly experimental device. Performance The operating system is Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean), which will be two versions behind when Android L debuts later this year. The system comes with a standard one-year warranty. You can, however, use a full-size SD card to add storage for videos, music, and the like.

The system has about 11GB free on the 16GB internal solid-state drive after initial setup, which is passable for an Android device, but you'd expect to tote larger files on a laptop. Downloading and using apps purchased from Google Play is easy, once you're logged into a Google account.

Thankfully, there are few preloaded apps: HP Connected Music HP Connected Photo HP ePrint Hulu Plus PowerDirector Splashtop Skitch TegraZone Wild Tangent Games and the aforementioned Kingsoft Office app. SoC reduces the energy needs of a system, and cuts down on heat and chassis size, though that's not necessarily a concern on a desktop-replacement laptop. For those who are unfamiliar with SoC, it basically consolidates what used to be a large number of chips (CPU, graphics, memory controller, power management, etc.) into a single chip. Thus, we didn't see the same app crashes and low-memory warnings that plagued the latter. You get the same quad-core 1.8GHz Nvidia Tegra 4 System on Chip (SoC) found on the HP SlateBook x2 and Slate 21, but HP includes 2GB of memory, compared with just 1GB in the HP Slate 21. While the SlateBook 14 is the first true Android laptop we've seen from a major manufacturer, the Lenovo Flex 2 (15-Inch) ($299.99 at Lenovo), our Editors' Choice for entry-level, desktop-replacement laptops, the Acer Aspire E5-471-59RT ( at Amazon), and large screen Chromebooks like the Toshiba CB35-A3120 Chromebook are the SlateBook 14's primary competition. The keyboard isn't detachable, as on the HP SlateBook x2, and the screen is larger, contributing to its 3.57-pound weight. Highlighting and inserting text is a snap, so you can conceivably write a term paper or manuscript easily on the system. Android support for the touchpad is good, with a pointer that also acts like you'd expect. The keyboard has a good feel, and typing long passages into the Kingsoft Office app is as easy as on any laptop. The yellow bottom, logo, and trim are the first signs that this isn't a run-of-the-mill laptop, though the chiclet-style keyboard and one-piece touchpad are standard on most desktop-replacement laptops. It measures 0.63 by 13.5 by 9.5 inches (HWD). It works a lot better than the HP Slate 21 desktop we looked at last year, but in the face of less expensive Chromebooks and fully functional Windows-based laptops, it begs the question: What's the point?ĭesign and Features The SlateBook 14 ( at Amazon) has a dark gray chassis, with pale yellow highlights on the HP logo and bottom lid. It's a good example of a product trying to find a user, in this case an Android fanatic who needs to access long documents like manuscripts or large spreadsheets. It's unique in that it's the first bonafide laptop we've seen with a Tegra 4, though we've tested a similar setup in the detachable-hybrid tablet HP SlateBook x2 ( at Amazon). The HP SlateBook 14-p010nr ($429.99 as tested) is a desktop-replacement laptop with an Nvidia Tegra 4 processor, running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.
